Middle School Essential Knowledge

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008
Welcome to our middle school essential knowledge page!!      My intent for this page is informational. I hope to give the parents and students a different view on educational matters. I will be posting my weekly lesson plans along with a few other things of interest to both parents and students.

I have been reading a lot of great books. My tastes in books go back and forth between Science Fiction and Historical Fiction.

Ann Rinaldi has to be my favorite author of all time.

Back to school and the love of literacy!  The students will be required to do at least 4 book summaries every nine weeks. The summaries are pretty simple but the students should be pretty thorough in their responses. They must think about what it is they are going to say and say it in complete sentences.

I would also LOVE for them to bring in one object that says something about the book they are reading. For example if they are reading the book Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillio they might bring in a dog collar or a hymnal and tell what role that object played in the book.

The reading logs are due on Fridays, or the day we return from any break we may have. Parents, if you would just remind your child that they should fill this out and turn it in they will receive 25 points for filling it out correctly and turning it in on time. Parents also must sign the Reading Log, this is worth at least 2 of the 25 points possible. Their fluency is recorded on a seperate sheet you should ask to see it so that you can see their gains.  Also, as mentioned above, they will have book summaries due this nine weeks.  I have walked them through the procedures in class. It is easy to fill out if they have read the book. They will need to use the CSRQ method for responding. We are venturing into other cultures and other authors so hang on.

Thanks for taking the journey with me through the 6th grade. Stay tuned for further news and updates.
